HIGH-DENSITY HYDRO®
IN NEW YORK STATE
GIS Insights and Commercial Opportunities

New York State is undergoing a significant transformation in its energy landscape, driven by ambitious decarbonization goals and increasing electrification. This transition presents several challenges in balancing projected energy demand with supply capabilities and ensuring grid reliability.
- The electrification of buildings, transportation, and industrial sectors is expected to increase electricity demand across the state.
New York faces challenges from heatwaves, winter storms (resulting from climate change), economic expansion in major cities, demographic shifts, industry electrification, and the rapid growth of data centers.
To meet these demands and achieve state decarbonization goals, New York plans to significantly increase its renewable energy capacity.
In June 2024, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the approval of a comprehensive roadmap to achieve 6,000 megawatts (MW) of energy storage by 2030, representing at least 20% of the state's peak electricity load.
These efforts are projected to reduce future statewide electric system costs by nearly $2 billion and improve public health by reducing exposure to harmful fossil fuel pollutants.
